 15th Apr 2025

The Commission oversaw the conduct of the Riara Primary & Junior school Students Council elections on the 25 February 2025.

This was part of the Commission’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activity to impart electoral tenets and knowledge to the young students. The Commission used the opportunity to carry out voter education for the pupils on the electoral process. The elections are conducted annually as informed by the school adminstration.

This year’s elections was however different as the institution introduced use of an online voting platform, dropping the reliance on physical ballot papers and bulky ballot boxes. This initiative was developed and designed by the schools’ ICT department. The Commission offered technical and professional guidance.

The elective positions contested for include President CSs for sports, ICT, education and environmental affairs. Other position ere governor for Grade (1 – 9) and MP for each stream in every grade. The voters roll had 1,263 voters with 26 polling stations.

Leonard Njenga, the Senior Elections Officer (SEO) for Dagoretti North Constituency served as the returning officer. He started off by holding a planning meeting with Riara Primary & Junior school elections committee at the IEBC Dagorretti North Constituency office, where an MoU was signed between the Commission and the school.

“We agreed that the school uses its manual register to verify voters. This determined the voter turnout. The Commission thus provided a returning officer, a presiding officer, a DPO and Five clerks while Riara Primary & Junior School nominated its teaching staff to serve to check and confirm students register,” said Mr. Njenga.

The school also provided computers installed with voting software while the Commission provided election materials, which included ballot boxes, polling booths, seals, indelible inks, pens and IEBC branding materials to help simulate the traditional polling station for the pupils to experience the manual elections.

After poll results trickled in, Maya Maina was elected President with Kemunto Nyaribo (education), Omar Mathenge (ICT), Adelina Muthoni (environmental studies) and Mascuid Adenelected CS Sports. In total the election recorded a 100 percent turnout and there were 72 elective positions and three polling centers – Riara primary and Junior school annex 1, Annex 2 and Annex 3.
