IEBC holds introductory meeting with Political Parties Liaison Committee
 29th Aug 2025

The Commission led by Chairperson Erastus Ethekon, on 18th August, 2025 held an introductory meeting with the Steering Committee of the Political Parties Liaison Committee (PPLC), led by its Chairperson Evans Misati.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Ethekon welcomed the PPLC leadership and underscored its indispensable role in the democratic process.

“We are pleased to convene this session to identify areas of focus, address emerging concerns, and chart a way forward together,” he said.

To enhance coordination with political parties, the IEBC Chairperson announced the appointment of Commissioner Marykaren Sorobit to oversee all matters relating to the PPLC. “Her leadership will be instrumental in ensuring that the Commission’s engagements with political parties are structured, responsive, and aligned with our broader electoral objectives,” he added.

On his part, Evans Misati thanked the Commission for convening the meeting and emphasized the importance of collaboration between the PPLC and IEBC in strengthening Kenya’s electoral process. He urged the Commission to actively involve the PPLC in key activities such as voter registration, by-elections, general elections, and public sensitization.

PPLC was established under Section 38 of the Political Parties Act, 2011 at both the national and county levels to provide a platform for structured dialogue between the Registrar of Political Parties, the Electoral Commission, and political parties. Its creation followed recommendations of the Kriegler Commission after the 2007 General Election. The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties has since sustained this dialogue framework through workshops and consultations.

The PPLC seeks to champion free, fair, peaceful, and transparent electoral processes in Kenya, while promoting genuine interaction, experience sharing, and information exchange between political parties and the Electoral Management Body. It further identifies gaps in electoral law and practice and proposes reforms through a consultative approach.

The committee was initially formed in 2009 following discussions between the Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC), the Registrar of Political Parties, and 47 registered political parties, culminating in the Nakuru Resolutions of March 2010. Its official launch was completed on 21st October 2010, with Nairobi being the last region inaugurated. Today, the PPLC operates at both the national and county levels as a central platform for electoral dialogue.
